PIERCING AFTERCARE
Proper piercing aftercare is crucial for safe healing and long-term results. A fresh piercing is an open wound, and without consistent care it’s vulnerable to infection, irritation, or scarring. Following the right aftercare routine helps your body heal naturally, keeps the area clean and free from bacteria, and protects the jewellery from becoming embedded or rejected. Taking the time to care for your piercing from day one ensures it heals beautifully and lasts for years to come.
Follow the instructions below carefully:
General Aftercare
Proper care is essential for healthy healing and to avoid complications. Follow these steps closely:
-
Always wash your hands thoroughly with antibacterial soap before touching or cleaning your piercing.
-
Clean the area twice daily using a sterile saline solution (we recommend the Pierced saline spray).
-
Soak or gently clean both sides of the piercing with a saline-saturated cotton bud or sterile gauze.
-
Dry the area carefully using a clean, disposable cotton bud — never reuse or share cleaning tools.
-
After showering, rinse your piercing with plain water to remove soap, shampoo, or conditioner residue.
-
Once healed, a mild antibacterial soap during regular showers will help maintain hygiene.
Oral Piercing Aftercare
Mouth piercings need special attention to maintain both oral hygiene and healing:
-
Brush your teeth twice daily (morning and night).
-
Gently brush your jewellery with your toothbrush while cleaning to prevent buildup.
-
Rinse your mouth after eating, drinking alcohol, smoking, or brushing with a non-alcoholic mouthwash or saline rinse.
-
Avoid excessive movement of the jewellery, as it can cause irritation or swelling.
-
Stay away from hot, spicy, or dairy-based foods and drinks during the first week of healing.
Piercing Blisters
Mild Blisters
If you notice a small blister or bump forming, visit one of our professional piercers as soon as possible.
We may recommend a Silicon Disk, designed to protect and cushion soft tissue piercings.
It prevents irritation or “sinking” caused by swelling and helps smooth out scarring or bumps.
When worn continuously for around 2–4 weeks, the Silicon Disk™ can safely and effectively reduce or even eliminate piercing bumps.
Our piercers will monitor your progress and guide you through the best care routine.
Severe Blisters
If your blister looks inflamed, painful, or continues to worsen, see one of our piercers immediately — you may also need to consult your GP for further treatment.
Helpful Hints
DO:
-
Wear natural fabrics (cotton, linen, silk) to allow your piercing to breathe. Avoid tight synthetic clothing that traps heat and moisture.
-
Support your body’s healing with supplements such as iron, vitamin B, vitamin C, and zinc.
-
Stay hydrated — good circulation and hydration promote faster healing.
-
Watch how you sleep:
-
Avoid pressure on new piercings (e.g. sleep on the opposite side for ear piercings).
-
For navel or nipple piercings, avoid sleeping on your stomach.
-
DO NOT:
-
Don’t use table salt when making your own saline; only use non-iodized sea salt.
-
Never touch your piercing with unwashed hands, and don’t let others touch it.
-
Avoid twisting or removing jewellery before the piercing is fully healed — this can damage the healing tissue and restart the process.
-
Keep hair, makeup, lotions, and fake tan away from the piercing site.
-
Don’t over-clean — excessive cleaning can strip away healthy bacteria and dry out the area.
-
Avoid swimming pools, lakes, oceans, and especially hot tubs until fully healed. If swimming is unavoidable, use a watertight covering (like a Tegaderm dressing).
-
Never use Betadine®, Hibiclens®, alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, or antibacterial soaps with triclosan, as they can damage healing tissue. Use saline solution only.
-
If you suspect infection, do not remove the jewellery unless advised by a medical professional — removing it can trap the infection and cause an abscess.
